Francesco Forgione, known as Padre Pio, was a Capuchin friar from Pietrelcina, Italy. In 1918, he received the stigmata — the five wounds of Christ — which he bore for 50 years until his death. He was known for his extraordinary spiritual gifts: reading souls in confession, bilocation, the fragrance of sanctity, and miraculous healings. Despite investigations and restrictions from Church authorities, his holiness and humility prevailed. He spent up to 16 hours daily hearing confessions and celebrated Mass with visible suffering and ecstasy. He founded the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza hospital. His cause for canonization moved rapidly, and he was declared a saint by John Paul II in 2002.
