📖Biography

Karol Józef Wojtyła was born in Wadowice, Poland. He survived the Nazi occupation, became a priest, then the youngest bishop in Poland. Elected Pope in 1978 as the first non-Italian pope in 455 years, he electrified the world with his first words: 'Be not afraid!' His pontificate was marked by historic achievements: helping bring down communism, establishing World Youth Day, writing the Theology of the Body, and making 104 pastoral trips to 129 countries. He survived an assassination attempt in 1981 and later forgave his would-be assassin. His public suffering from Parkinson's disease became a striking witness to the dignity of life. He was canonized in 2014.
