๐Biography
Maximilian Maria Kolbe was a Polish Franciscan friar who pioneered the use of media for evangelization, founding a publishing center that produced newspapers, magazines, and radio broadcasts. He was deeply devoted to the Immaculate Virgin Mary, founding the Militia Immaculatae movement. During World War II, he sheltered thousands of refugees, including 2,000 Jews. Arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Auschwitz, he volunteered to take the place of a stranger, Franciszek Gajowniczek, who had been selected for death by starvation. After two weeks in the starvation bunker, still alive and praying, he was killed by lethal injection on August 14, 1941. He was canonized in 1982 as a 'martyr of charity.'
