📖Biography
Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada entered the Carmelite convent in Ávila, Spain at age 20. After years of spiritual mediocrity, she experienced a dramatic conversion before a statue of the wounded Christ. She became one of the Church's greatest mystics, experiencing visions, ecstasies, and transverberation (the piercing of her heart by an angel's dart). She reformed the Carmelite Order, founding the Discalced Carmelites despite fierce opposition. Her masterworks, The Interior Castle and The Way of Perfection, remain essential guides to contemplative prayer. In 1970, she became the first woman declared a Doctor of the Church. Her wit, practicality, and deep prayer life make her relatable across centuries.
