πŸ“–Biography

Catherine Benincasa was born in Siena as one of 25 children. She experienced mystical visions from childhood and resisted her family's attempts to arrange a marriage. She became a Dominican tertiary at 16 and spent three years in solitary prayer before entering public life. Her spiritual wisdom attracted a circle of followers called the 'Caterinati.' She boldly wrote to popes, kings, and bishops, and personally persuaded Pope Gregory XI to return the papacy from Avignon to Rome. Her major work, The Dialogue, records her mystical conversations with God. She received the stigmata (visible only after death) and died at 33 from self-imposed fasting. She was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1970.
