๐Ÿ“–Biography

Nicholas was born to wealthy Christian parents in Patara (modern Turkey). Orphaned young, he used his inheritance to help the poor. He became Bishop of Myra and was known for his generosity, especially the story of providing dowries for three poor sisters by secretly throwing bags of gold through their window. He attended the Council of Nicaea (325), where tradition says he slapped the heretic Arius in defense of Christ's divinity. He was imprisoned during the Diocletian persecution but survived. His reputation for generosity and miracle-working spread throughout the Christian world, eventually evolving into the Santa Claus tradition. His relics in Bari, Italy, continue to attract pilgrims.
