St. Christopher's story blends history and legend. According to tradition, he was a giant of a man named Reprobus who sought to serve the greatest king. After serving an earthly king and then the devil, he learned that Christ was the greatest king of all. A hermit told him to serve Christ by carrying travelers across a dangerous river. One night, he carried a small child who grew impossibly heavy. The child revealed himself as Christ, saying Christopher had borne the weight of the world. The name Christopher means 'Christ-bearer.' Though his historical details are uncertain, his patronage of travelers remains deeply popular. The St. Christopher medal is one of the most widely worn Catholic devotional items.
