What is a spiritual director?

A spiritual director is an experienced person of faith — often a priest, religious sister or brother, or trained layperson — who accompanies another person on their spiritual journey through regular one-on-one conversations. Spiritual direction is not therapy or counseling, though it may touch on similar themes. Its focus is on discerning the movement of the Holy Spirit in one's life, deepening one's prayer life, and growing in relationship with God. Sessions typically occur monthly and last about an hour. The directee shares their experiences of prayer, consolation, desolation, and life circumstances, while the director listens, asks questions, and offers guidance rooted in the Catholic spiritual tradition. The practice has deep roots in Catholic history, from the Desert Fathers and Mothers of the 3rd century to the Ignatian tradition of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
