How often should I go to Mass?

💬Answer

The Church obliges all Catholics to attend Mass every Sunday and on Holy Days of Obligation. This is the minimum requirement, known as the Sunday obligation, and is one of the Precepts of the Church. Missing Mass on a Sunday or Holy Day without a serious reason (such as illness, caring for an infant, or being unable to travel) is considered a mortal sin. However, the Church encourages Catholics to attend Mass more frequently — even daily. Daily Mass typically lasts only 25-30 minutes and offers the profound grace of receiving the Eucharist, hearing the Scriptures proclaimed, and joining the universal Church in worship. Many saints have attributed their spiritual growth to daily Mass. Pope Francis has spoken of the Mass as spiritual nourishment necessary for living as a Christian in the world. If you are returning to Mass after a long absence, simply come — you are always welcome. If you have mortal sins to confess, go to Confession before receiving Communion.
