๐Biography
Simon, a fisherman from Bethsaida, was called by Jesus and renamed Peter (Cephas, meaning 'rock'). Despite his impulsive nature โ walking on water then sinking, professing faith then denying Christ three times โ Jesus chose Peter to lead His Church: 'You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.' After the Resurrection, Jesus restored Peter by asking three times, 'Do you love me?' Peter became the bold leader of the early Church, preaching at Pentecost, performing miracles, and opening the Church to Gentiles. He traveled to Rome, where tradition holds he was crucified upside down under Emperor Nero, feeling unworthy to die as his Lord did. St. Peter's Basilica stands over his tomb.
๐Prayer to St. Peter the Apostle
O Holy Apostle, because you are the Rock upon which Almighty God has built His Church, obtain for me I pray you: lively faith, firm hope, and burning love; complete detachment from myself, contempt of the world, patience in adversity, humility in prosperity, recollection in prayer, purity of heart, a right intention in all my works, diligence in fulfilling the duties of my state of life, constancy in my resolutions, resignation to the will of God, and final perseverance. Amen.
