Simon, a fisherman from Bethsaida, was called by Jesus and renamed Peter (Cephas, meaning 'rock'). Despite his impulsive nature — walking on water then sinking, professing faith then denying Christ three times — Jesus chose Peter to lead His Church: 'You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.' After the Resurrection, Jesus restored Peter by asking three times, 'Do you love me?' Peter became the bold leader of the early Church, preaching at Pentecost, performing miracles, and opening the Church to Gentiles. He traveled to Rome, where tradition holds he was crucified upside down under Emperor Nero, feeling unworthy to die as his Lord did. St. Peter's Basilica stands over his tomb.
