πŸ“–Biography

Dymphna was an Irish princess, the daughter of a pagan king. After her Christian mother died, her father descended into madness and demanded to marry Dymphna because of her resemblance to her mother. She fled to Gheel, Belgium with her confessor, Fr. Gerebernus. Her father tracked her down and, when she refused to return, killed both her and the priest. After her death, numerous people with mental illness were healed at her tomb. Gheel became a center for the care of the mentally ill β€” a tradition that continues today with a community-based mental health system that has operated for over 700 years. St. Dymphna is one of the most widely invoked saints for those suffering from anxiety, depression, and psychological disorders.
