Good Friday

The most solemn day of the Catholic year. We commemorate the Passion and Death of our Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross.

✝️What is Good Friday?

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ at Calvary. It is the second day of the Paschal Triduum, following Holy Thursday and preceding Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday.

No Mass is celebrated on Good Friday — it is the only day of the year this occurs (along with Holy Saturday before the Vigil). Instead, the Church celebrates the Celebration of the Lord's Passion, which includes the reading of the Passion according to John, the Solemn Intercessions, and the Veneration of the Cross.

Good Friday is a day of fasting (one full meal, two smaller meals, ages 18-59) and abstinence from meat (age 14+). It is not a Holy Day of Obligation, but Catholics are strongly encouraged to attend the afternoon service.

7️⃣The Seven Last Words of Jesus

1Forgiveness
"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."

Luke 23:34

Even in agony, Jesus prays for those who crucify Him. He shows us that forgiveness is not a feeling but a choice — a choice to love even those who hurt us most.

2Salvation
"Today you will be with me in Paradise."

Luke 23:43

The Good Thief receives the promise of paradise with a single act of faith. No sin is too great, no conversion too late. God's mercy is available until our final breath.

3Mary as Mother
"Woman, behold your son. Son, behold your mother."

John 19:26-27

Jesus entrusts Mary to John — and through him, to all of us. In His dying moments, He gives us His mother. Mary becomes the Mother of the Church.

4Desolation
"My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?"

Matthew 27:46

Jesus quotes Psalm 22, entering into the full depth of human suffering and abandonment. Yet Psalm 22 ends in triumph — even this cry is ultimately one of trust.

5Desire
"I thirst."

John 19:28

Jesus thirsts not only for water but for souls. He thirsts for our love, our trust, our surrender. Mother Teresa heard these words as a personal call to serve the poorest of the poor.

6Completion
"It is finished."

John 19:30

The work of redemption is complete. Not "I am finished" — but "It is finished." The mission the Father gave Him is accomplished. Our salvation is won.

7Surrender
"Father, into your hands I commend my spirit."

Luke 23:46

Jesus' final words are a prayer of total trust and surrender. He teaches us how to die — and how to live: by placing everything in the Father's hands.

🙇Veneration of the Cross

During the Good Friday service, a crucifix is solemnly unveiled in three stages, with the priest singing “Behold the wood of the Cross, on which hung the salvation of the world” and the congregation responding “Come, let us adore.”

The faithful then approach the Cross individually to venerate it — traditionally by kissing or touching the feet of the corpus, or by a profound bow. This is not worship of the wood itself, but honor given to Christ who suffered upon it.

The Reproaches (Improperia) may be sung during the veneration — ancient texts in which God addresses His people: “My people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me!”

🙏 Good Friday Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, set your Passion, Cross, and Death between your judgment and our souls, now and in the hour of our death. Grant mercy and grace to the living, rest to the dead, to your holy Church peace and concord, and to us sinners everlasting life and glory. You who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
