Stations of the Cross

Walk with Jesus on the Via Crucis — 14 stations of prayer, meditation, and Scripture following His path from condemnation to burial.

Traditionally prayed on Fridays during Lent · ~30 minutes

Opening Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, take me along that holy way you once took to your death. Take my mind, my memory, above all my reluctant heart, and let me see what once you did for love of me and all the world. Amen.

1

Jesus Is Condemned to Death

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus called Christ?" They all said, "Let him be crucified!"

Matthew 27:22

Meditation

Jesus stands before Pilate, innocent yet condemned. The crowd chooses Barabbas over the Son of God. In this moment, Jesus accepts the Father's will, embracing the path of suffering for our salvation. How often do we condemn others unjustly? How often do we choose comfort over truth?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you were condemned to death for my sins. Help me to accept the crosses in my life with the same grace and humility you showed before Pilate. Give me the courage to stand for truth, even when the crowd demands otherwise. Amen.

2

Jesus Carries His Cross

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

And carrying the cross himself, he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha.

John 19:17

Meditation

The heavy wooden cross is placed upon Jesus' shoulders — shoulders already torn by scourging. He does not refuse it. He embraces it as the instrument of our redemption. Every cross we carry in life is an invitation to walk with Christ on this sacred path.

Prayer

Lord, help me to carry my daily crosses without complaint. When the weight becomes unbearable, remind me that you walk beside me, sharing my burden. Transform my suffering into an offering of love. Amen.

3

Jesus Falls the First Time

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

He was spurned and avoided by people, a man of suffering, accustomed to infirmity.

Isaiah 53:3

Meditation

Under the crushing weight of the cross — and the weight of all human sin — Jesus falls. The God who holds the universe in His hands falls to the ground. Yet He rises. He always rises. Our falls are not final when we turn to Christ.

Prayer

Lord, when I fall into sin or discouragement, give me the strength to rise again. Help me never to stay down in despair, but to trust in your mercy that always lifts me up. Amen.

4

Jesus Meets His Mother

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

And you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

Luke 2:35

Meditation

Mary sees her Son, bruised and bleeding, carrying the cross to His death. The sword Simeon prophesied pierces her heart. Yet she does not turn away. She stands with Him in solidarity, sharing His suffering with the strength only a mother's love can give.

Prayer

Blessed Mother, you who shared so deeply in your Son's suffering, pray for all mothers who suffer for their children. Help us to stand with those who suffer, never turning away from their pain. Amen.

5

Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus Carry the Cross

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

They pressed into service a passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country, to carry his cross.

Mark 15:21

Meditation

Simon did not volunteer — he was forced to carry the cross. Yet in that reluctant service, he encountered Christ. Sometimes God calls us to bear burdens we did not choose. In helping others carry their crosses, we find our own path to holiness.

Prayer

Lord, open my eyes to see those around me who need help carrying their crosses. Give me a willing heart to serve, even when it is inconvenient. May I recognize your face in every person who suffers. Amen.

6

Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

Your face, LORD, I will seek. Do not hide your face from me.

Psalm 27:8-9

Meditation

While soldiers and crowds stand by, one woman breaks through with a simple act of compassion — wiping the blood and sweat from Jesus' face. Tradition holds that His image was imprinted on her cloth. Every act of kindness, no matter how small, bears the imprint of Christ.

Prayer

Lord, give me the courage of Veronica — to step forward when others stand back, to offer comfort when the world offers only cruelty. Help me to see your face in those who suffer and to respond with love. Amen.

7

Jesus Falls the Second Time

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28

Meditation

Jesus falls again. The road to Calvary grows steeper, the cross heavier. This second fall reminds us that the journey of faith is not a straight line. We fall repeatedly into the same sins, the same weaknesses. But Jesus shows us: falling is not failing. Refusing to rise is failing.

Prayer

Lord, I fall again and again into the same sins. I grow weary of my own weakness. But you fell too, and you rose. Give me the grace to keep rising, to never give up on the journey toward you. Amen.

8

Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children.

Luke 23:28

Meditation

Even while carrying the cross to His death, Jesus thinks of others. He consoles the weeping women and warns them of what is to come. His compassion never ceases, even in His greatest agony. True love forgets itself in concern for others.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to look beyond my own suffering and see the needs of others. Even in my darkest moments, help me to offer words of comfort and hope to those around me. Amen.

9

Jesus Falls the Third Time

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he saves those whose spirit is crushed.

Psalm 34:19

Meditation

Three times Jesus falls, and three times He rises. The third fall, so near to Calvary, is the most exhausting. He is nearly spent. Yet love drives Him forward. This station speaks to those moments when we feel we cannot go on — when the weight of life seems too much. Even then, grace is sufficient.

Prayer

Lord, when I feel I have reached the end of my strength, when I fall for what seems the final time, lift me up with your grace. Remind me that your power is made perfect in my weakness. Amen.

10

Jesus Is Stripped of His Garments

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

They divided his garments among them by casting lots.

Matthew 27:35

Meditation

Jesus is stripped of everything — His clothing, His dignity, His privacy. He stands exposed before the world, completely vulnerable. In this humiliation, He redeems our attachment to status, appearance, and material things. He shows us that true dignity comes not from what we wear but from who we are in God.

Prayer

Lord, strip away my attachments to worldly things — my pride, my vanity, my need for approval. Clothe me instead with humility, charity, and trust in you alone. Amen.

11

Jesus Is Nailed to the Cross

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the criminals there.

Luke 23:33

Meditation

The nails pierce His hands and feet — the hands that healed the sick, the feet that walked on water. Each nail driven in is a sin forgiven. Jesus is fixed to the cross, unable to move, completely surrendered. In this total self-offering, He opens wide His arms to embrace all of humanity.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you were nailed to the cross for love of me. Help me to nail my sinful desires to your cross. When I am tempted, let me remember the price you paid for my freedom. Amen.

12

Jesus Dies on the Cross

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit." And when he had said this, he breathed his last.

Luke 23:46

Meditation

It is finished. The Son of God breathes His last. The sky darkens, the earth shakes, the veil of the temple is torn in two. In this moment of apparent defeat, the greatest victory in human history is won. Death itself is conquered by the One who chose to die.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, by your death on the cross, you destroyed death and opened the gates of heaven. Help me to die to sin each day so that I may live more fully in you. Into your hands, I commend my spirit. Amen.

13

Jesus Is Taken Down from the Cross

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

Joseph of Arimathea, a distinguished member of the council, came and courageously went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

Mark 15:43

Meditation

Mary receives the body of her Son — the same body she held as an infant in Bethlehem. The Pietà: a mother's grief beyond all words. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, secret disciples, now step forward publicly. Sometimes courage comes after the crisis, but it still counts.

Prayer

Lord, give me the courage of Joseph and Nicodemus — to claim you publicly, even when it costs me. Console all who mourn, especially mothers who have lost their children. Amen.

14

Jesus Is Laid in the Tomb

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

They took the body of Jesus and bound it with burial cloths along with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom.

John 19:40

Meditation

The stone is rolled into place. Darkness and silence. The world holds its breath. But this is not the end of the story — it is the pause before the greatest dawn in history. Every tomb in our lives — every ending, every loss, every death — is pregnant with the possibility of resurrection.

Prayer

Lord, when I face the tombs in my life — the dead ends, the losses, the moments of darkness — help me to trust that resurrection is coming. The stone will be rolled away. You are the God who brings life from death. Amen.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, Son of the living God, set your Passion, Cross, and Death between your judgment and our souls, now and in the hour of our death. Grant mercy and grace to the living, rest to the dead, to your holy Church peace and concord, and to us sinners everlasting life and glory. You who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
