The Holy Trinity

CCC 232-267

๐Ÿ“–Overview

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of the Christian faith and of Christian life. It is the mystery of God in Himself, the source of all other mysteries of faith, and the light that enlightens them. God has revealed Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: three distinct Persons who are one God. This is not three gods (tritheism) nor one God in three modes (modalism), but one God in three co-equal, co-eternal, consubstantial Persons. The Father is the principle without principle, the Son is eternally begotten of the Father, and the Holy Spirit eternally proceeds from the Father and the Son (filioque). The divine Persons are distinguished from one another solely by their relations of origin: paternity, filiation, and spiration. The whole divine economy is the common work of the three divine Persons, though each Person performs the common work according to His unique personal property. The Trinity is a mystery of faith in the strict sense, one of the mysteries hidden in God which can never be known unless revealed by God. The ultimate end of the whole divine economy is the entry of God's creatures into the perfect unity of the Blessed Trinity.
