The Profession of Faith (The Creed)
๐Overview
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, The Creed is the summary of the principal truths of the Catholic faith, handed down from the Apostles and professed by the faithful throughout the centuries. The two most ancient and authoritative creeds are the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed. The Apostles' Creed is considered a faithful summary of the Apostles' faith, while the Nicene Creed, formulated at the Councils of Nicaea (325) and Constantinople (381), clarified essential doctrines against early heresies. The Creed is structured around belief in the three Persons of the Holy Trinity: God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered, died, and rose again; and the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life. To profess the Creed is to enter into relation with the Holy Trinity and with the Church, which transmits the faith. Faith is both a personal act and an ecclesial act: the Church believes first, and so bears, nourishes, and sustains the faith of each individual. The Creed is an act of faith in God who reveals Himself and gives Himself to humanity, providing an ultimate meaning to life.
