The Brown Scapular is a sacramental consisting of two small pieces of brown cloth connected by strings, worn over the shoulders. It originated from a vision of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to St. Simon Stock in 1251, in which Mary promised: 'Whoever dies wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.' This is understood not as a magic charm but as a sign of consecration to Mary and commitment to living a Christian life. To wear the scapular validly: (1) Be enrolled by a priest or authorized person (a one-time ceremony). (2) Wear it continuously — it should hang front and back. (3) Live according to the obligations (varies by Carmelite tradition). Modern scapular medals may substitute for the cloth scapular after initial enrollment.
