The devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary honors the interior life of the Blessed Virgin — her joys, sorrows, virtues, and above all her love for God and for her Son Jesus. The Heart of Mary symbolizes her perfect love and her role as the spiritual mother of all Christians. While devotion to Mary's heart has roots in the writings of St. John Eudes (17th century) and earlier, it received its greatest impetus from the Fatima apparitions of 1917, where Mary asked the three shepherd children to promote devotion to her Immaculate Heart and the practice of the Five First Saturdays: on five consecutive first Saturdays of the month, the faithful are asked to go to Confession, receive Communion, pray five decades of the Rosary, and keep Mary company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, all in reparation for sins committed against the Immaculate Heart. Pope Pius XII consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1942, and Pope Francis renewed this consecration (specifically including Russia and Ukraine) in 2022. The Feast of the Immaculate Heart is celebrated the day after the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
