Lent is a 40-day liturgical season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday evening. It prepares Catholics for the celebration of Easter — the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The 40 days recall Jesus' time of fasting and temptation in the desert (Matthew 4:1-11). During Lent, Catholics are called to deepen their relationship with God through self-denial, charitable works, and increased prayer. Sundays are not counted among the 40 days because every Sunday is a celebration of the Resurrection. The liturgical color for Lent is purple, symbolizing penance and preparation.
