Marie-Bernarde Soubirous was the eldest daughter of a desperately poor family in Lourdes, France. Sickly, uneducated, and asthmatic, she was an unlikely visionary. In 1858, at age 14, she experienced 18 apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the grotto of Massabielle. The Lady, dressed in white with a blue sash, identified herself as 'the Immaculate Conception.' She instructed Bernadette to dig in the ground, revealing a spring whose waters have been associated with numerous miraculous healings. Despite skepticism and harsh interrogation from authorities, Bernadette maintained a simple, consistent account. She entered the Sisters of Charity at Nevers, where she suffered greatly from illness. Her body was found incorrupt after death, and Lourdes became one of the world's greatest pilgrimage sites.
