๐Biography
Benedict was born in Nursia, Italy, and studied in Rome before retreating to a cave in Subiaco to live as a hermit. His holiness attracted followers, and he eventually established the monastery of Monte Cassino, where he wrote his famous Rule. The Rule of St. Benedict balanced prayer, work, and community life with the motto 'Ora et Labora' (Pray and Work). It became the foundational document for Western monasticism and shaped European civilization. Benedictine monasteries preserved learning, agriculture, and culture through the Dark Ages. Benedict was declared patron of Europe by Paul VI in 1964. The Benedictine Medal remains one of the most popular sacramentals in the Church.
