❓Common Questions
Can I eat chicken on Fridays during Lent?
No. Chicken is the flesh of a warm-blooded animal. Only fish and seafood are permitted on Fridays during Lent.
Is fish considered meat?
No. In Catholic tradition, "meat" refers to the flesh of warm-blooded land animals. Fish and seafood are not classified as meat for Lenten purposes.
Can I eat eggs and dairy on Fridays?
Yes. Eggs, cheese, milk, butter, and other dairy products are permitted on days of abstinence.
What if I accidentally eat meat on a Friday?
If it was truly accidental (without knowledge or intention), it is not a sin. If you remember mid-meal, stop eating the meat and continue with non-meat items.
Are Sundays exempt from Lenten sacrifices?
Sundays are not counted among the 40 days of Lent because every Sunday is a celebration of the Resurrection. Some Catholics maintain their sacrifices on Sundays, but it is not required.
Who is exempt from fasting?
Those under 18 or over 59, pregnant or nursing mothers, the sick, and those with medical conditions that prevent fasting. When in doubt, consult your pastor.
🙏Why Do Catholics Fast?
Fasting is not a diet — it is a spiritual discipline with deep roots:
Imitating Christ
Jesus fasted 40 days in the desert before beginning His public ministry (Matthew 4:1-2). We follow His example.
Self-discipline
Denying our appetites strengthens our will against temptation in all areas of life.
Solidarity with the poor
Experiencing hunger connects us with the millions who go hungry daily and motivates charitable giving.
Making room for God
When we empty ourselves of earthly comforts, we create space for God to fill us with spiritual nourishment.
Penance for sin
Voluntary sacrifice is a form of reparation for our sins and the sins of the world.
