Cyrus of Persia allows the Jews to return to Jerusalem. Zerubbabel leads the first wave and rebuilds the Temple (completed 515 BC). Decades later, Ezra the scribe leads a second wave and discovers that the people have intermarried with pagans. He leads a dramatic act of repentance and covenant renewal, re-establishing the Torah as the foundation of Jewish life.
