Esther, a Jewish orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai, becomes queen to King Ahasuerus (Xerxes) of Persia. When the villain Haman plots to destroy all Jews, Mordecai urges Esther to intervene with the famous words: 'Perhaps you were born for such a time as this.' Esther risks her life to reveal Haman's plot, the Jews are saved, Haman is hanged, and the feast of Purim is established. The Catholic additions include Mordecai's and Esther's prayers.
