The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are permanent dispositions given to the soul at Baptism and strengthened at Confirmation that make the faithful open and responsive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. They are drawn from Isaiah 11:2-3 and are: (1) Wisdom — the ability to see things from God's perspective and judge earthly matters in light of eternal truth. (2) Understanding — a deeper insight into the mysteries of faith that goes beyond intellectual knowledge. (3) Counsel (Right Judgment) — the ability to discern the right course of action, especially in difficult situations. (4) Fortitude (Courage) — the strength to do what is right even in the face of opposition, fear, or suffering. (5) Knowledge — the capacity to perceive God's plan and purpose in creation and in one's life. (6) Piety (Reverence) — a deep sense of respect and love for God and devotion to His service. (7) Fear of the Lord (Wonder and Awe) — not a servile fear but a reverential awe of God's majesty, goodness, and power that makes one reluctant to offend Him. These gifts are distinct from the fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) and from charisms, which are special graces given for the service of others.
