Getting Started
How do you become Catholic?
💬Answer
Adults become Catholic through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), now also called the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA). The process typically takes about a year and includes: (1) Inquiry — exploring the faith and asking questions. (2) Catechumenate — deeper study of Catholic teaching, Scripture, and prayer. (3) Purification and Enlightenment — intensive spiritual preparation during Lent. (4) Sacraments of Initiation — receiving Baptism (if not previously baptized), Confirmation, and First Eucharist, usually at the Easter Vigil. (5) Mystagogy — continued growth in faith after initiation. Contact your local parish to start. A sponsor (an active Catholic) accompanies you throughout the journey.
